On completing this portrait I was struck by the similarities of this young woman and the African mask Mwana Pwo. Mwana Pwo is the African goddess who represents female ancestors and the beauty and wisdom of women. She is called upon during initiation ceremonies to watch over the fertility of the tribe. |
